Kalpana (Nanda) belongs to a wealthy family and is the only daughter of Shyamlal (Om Shivpuri). Kalpana falls in love with Rajesh (Rajesh Khanna) who is very poor. When Shyamlal comes to know about Kalpana's affair he fixes her marriage with a boy from another rich family. Kalpana flees away from home to get married to Rajesh . They both do a registered marriage. Furious Shyamal refuses to keep any contacts with his daughter & decides to give away his property to his nephew Ramesh (Ramesh Dev). Ramesh who has his eyes set on Shyamlal's property has always pretended to be very innocent & obedient. Kalpana & Rajesh settle down. Kalpana has kept in touch with her mother. To sort out the differences, Rajesh and Kalpana go to meet Shyamlal. But Shyamal insults Kalpana and refuses to meet Rajesh. After few days, Kalpana delivers a baby boy. She informs her mother about the baby and lies that Rjesh has now become a partner in his firm and owns a bungalow and car. Hearing the news about the baby & Rajesh's progress, Shyamal decides to patch up. Shyamlal & his wife decide to visit their grandson. Kalpana is in big trouble now as she needs to live up to the high expectations of her father. How she copes with the situation is well shown in the movie.
