Kusum (Hema Malini) is a simple girl from a small village who stays with her elder brother Kunj (Asrani). Kusum is engaged to Vrindavan (Jeetendra) at a very young age. Kusum has even tattooed Vrindavan's name on her arm. But Kusum & Vrindavan get separated, as Vrindavan's father breaks this relationship due to some misunderstandings. Kusum who has always dreamed of marrying Vrindavan feels betrayed & she burns her arm to eradicate the tatoo. Years later, Kusum has grown up & works as the governess of a rich lady.Chaudrain falls sick and her son brings a doctor to see her. This doctor is Vrindavan and Kusum's whole world turns upside down. Vrindavan also discovers that Kusum is the same girl with whom he was engaged. He gets a shock to learn that Kusum is still unmarried & waiting for him. Vrindavan is a widowed man with a son. This situation puts Kusum in a big dilemma. Is a tender and mute love story between a village doctor and a headstrong girl, who, on being spurned by the docotrs father on the eve of the marriage, vows to remain unmarried. A chance meeting between the doctor, who is now a widower with a child, and the girl eventually blossoms into a re-union byt not before they have gone though their "little" hells due to the youths inhability to directly propose to the girl.
