Mahakabi Girishchandra is a 1956 Indian Bengali biographical film released on 1956. The film is directed by Madhu Bose, music composed by Anil Bagchi.

No body could have dreamt that vagabond Girish of Bagbazar amateur club would one day become the legendary creator of Basali theatre. Nobody could have thought that one day he would write immortal plays like “siraj-ud-doula”, “mirkashim”, “chaitamyalita”, “balidan”, “bilwamangal” . Nobody could even think that one day British govt had to impore ?“theatre regulation act” ?and ban him dramax ?. His acting inspired the bengali psyche in patriotism. As a human being, he was apparently restless and strongly passionate, but inside he was very calm, tranquil. So the public reactions were of two kinds. Who had only seen his restless passion, they hated him, and who had seen his inner calmness, they had praised him. On one side he was a happy family man surrounded by wife and sons, on the other side he was a master actor in the theatre. It was very surprising that his first meeting with Ramkrishna was full of disbelief. Initially he thought Ramkrishna was a fraud. But the irony of fatec was such that he could find the taste of freedom when he was devoted completely to Ramkrishna. Till death he followed the instructions of Ramkrishna to act and speak for the oppressed.
