Lakshmi looked after Subash, her motherless brother, with the affection of a mother and saved him from regular clash with their father, who opposed Subash from befriending Ranga, whom he considered a bad character. The clash of ideologies made Subhash drift away. To pay his debts Lakshmi mortgaged her wedding jewel. Subhashs eyes opened due to the sacrifice of his sister.
