Indian cinema is like a massive bouquet of wildflowers of different colours and smells. You really can't judge Policegiri, Sanjay Dutt's hefty homage to hero-giri completed before serving the remainder of his prison term, against the soft gently-undulating movements of the week's other release Lootera. If Vikramaditya Motwane's film is soft-petalled rose, Policegiri is a wild cactus flower from the desert. Why cactus? The landscape is populated with pricksRead full review2.5

If you are a fan of Rajinikanth's over-the-top action, if films like Wanted, Dabangg and Singham entertain you and if you like Sanju baba's style, Policegiri is bound to make you whistle. Clearly catering to the masses and fans of masala potboilers, this Hindi remake of Tamil blockbuster Saamy (2003) has all the right ingredients, required to appeal to its audience. It has the standard 'cop-cleansing-crime' theme, gravity defying stunts, slow-mo loud action scenesRead full review2.0

The fight between the virtuous and wicked has been the staple diet of several Indian movies since eons. Although the trend of remaking South Indian films in Hindi was widespread in the 1980s, it got an impetus with films like GHAJINI [2008] and WANTED [2009] in the last decade. Now veteran producer T.P. Aggarwal joins the growing list of film-makers remaking a winning South Indian film. The film in question is the Tamil hitRead full review2.0

When a policeman is willing to be corrupt in order to clean the system, it calls for an interesting tale. But then, in this case, he’s not all alone throughout so there are several layers attached to him — allowing space for criticism. Even though this film marking director KS Ravikumar’s Bollywood debut is fast-paced, it begs for better execution and fewer stereotypes. Apart from high-octane action laced with funny dialogues, there’s very little to whistle atRead full review2.0

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rudra Aditya Devraj (Sanjay Dutt) comes into this South Indian town called Nagapuram and takes up cudgels against the reigning don Nagori Subramaniam (Prakash Raj). The don has the top policemen and politicians in his pocket but somehow Rudra manages to outwit and outpunch him. He also finds time to woo and marry a pretty girl Sehar (Prachi Desai), whose only contribution to the film is to be the eye candyRead full review2.0

The combo of police and goon, DCP Rudra (Sanjay Dutt) is a menace for wrong doers. Coming across as superhero, watch him clean off Nagarpura and take on local goon Nagori (Prakash Raj) with an effective blend of rowdyism and kind heartedness. His sensitive side is unleashed when he falls in love with the ravishing Seher (Prachi Desai). Translating himself as a messiah for the panic stricken localites, his unique combo way of tackling crimeRead full review1.5

Policegiri meets with the prerequisites of the ‘tired’ and tested genre. Remake a South film. Overdo the action. Have a police protagonist. But for a genre that demands a topless torso, a paunchy protagonist is visibly misfit.Read full review1.5

A song in the film goes like, ‘Munna stud hai, aisi smile hai, jhappi dene ka public ka karta mood hai.’ Well, not exactly.Read full review1.0

Dabangg is now officially a genre. Here are some of the salient features of the category and how Policegiri fits perfectly in. The film has to be about a cop. And he must be corrupt. Because you can't fight the system unless you're part of the system. I'm given to understand they're putting this in school textbooks next year. An allusion to Robin Hood must be made. Policegiri does neatly by doing a song on it picturized in front of a giant Ganesh idol. Also a must.Read full review1.0

Ten years ago, superhit Tamil film Saamy presented a Robin Hood type cop making whoopee in a small town. That cop was played by Vikram with great raffish style, and was the inspiration for Salman Khan's act in Dabangg. The dark glasses thrust down the back of the shirt was an idea that Dabangg stole, among several others. I watched Saamy and can testify that it was a hoot. Policegiri is a remake of Saamy, and it is most certainly not a hootRead full review1.0

For a film that is as spectacularly dumb, Policegiri makes far too much noise. The actors holler at the top of their voices, the action sequences are mind-numbingly silly, the background score can pierce through any cotton-wool shield, and the storyline is all sound and fury, and little else. Policegiri is veteran Tamil director KS Ravikumar’s first Hindi film. It better be the last. Mumbai has enough homegrown talent to take care of this brandRead full review1.0

Plots with threadbare logic rely too much on larger-than-life heroics to draw its target audience in. But none of Dutt’s swagger is blustering enough to put up with a film as deafening, dowdy and drudging as Policegiri.Read full review1.0
