Story

Punorutthan is a 2011 Indian Bengali drama film released on Mar 04, 2011. The film is directed by Rishi Mukherjee.

The film is about the saga of the Mullick family and how someone from the family later on saves the family from being completely ruined. In fact that person saves the entire prestige and honour of the family. Mahendra Mullick who has a flourishing business in potato flakes loves Sujata and she even gets pregnant, but Mahendra gets married to her elder sister Sabitri. In due course of time they have two sons, Kuntal and Kanchan. They can't manage their business and gradually they lose everything and even their house 'Mullick Villa’ goes up an auction. Siddharta, Mahendra’s son from Sujata comes forward to save the Mullick family and stops the auction with the help of the family solicitor. How the family saga gradually unfolds into a tale of love, power, greed, honour and prestige is what the film is all about.

When there are too many characters in a film, the focus seems to wander. And this is one reason why Rishi Mukherjee's debut venture falls a few paces short. But one has to remember 'To err is human... ' And it is but natural that a debut vehicle will not be perfect. In spite of the shortcomings, what still holds fort for the film is the storyline, which is not the Tollywood song-and-dance routine. It takes off with the sad state of affairs at Mallick bari. The 64-year-old house is up for bids along with their potato chip factory. And those to be blamed for this misfortune are Mahendra Mallick's (Victor) two sons. But all is saved. Thanks to the timely intervention of Sujata Group of Industries and its director, Siddhartha (Priyanshu). The director, quite interestingly, keeps the suspense alive about Siddhartha's identity and the reason why he goes all out to save Mallick paribar. The twist in the tale lies in the relationship between Mahendra, Sujata (Siddhartha's mother) and Sabitri (his wife). Hey, don't expect us to divulge the details. You'll have to buy a ticket to know the rest. Rishi also puts forth another point. He tries to refute the popular notion that Bengalis aren't good businessmen. Ambika Das (Sabyasachi) takes a swipe at the business community of this city saying if Bengalis did serious business, others would be left to selling bhujia and chhatu only. Meanwhile, Ambika and Siddhartha team up to plot against those scheming minds who had brought about the downfall of Mallick bari and defeat them in their own game playing by their rules. Actingwise, Rituparna, Priyanshu, Sabyasachi, Reema, Rajesh and Raza do a commendable job though one wants a bit more screen time of Victor Banerjee. But, there are certain characters who come across as a baggage to the film. With a crisper script, the director would have won brownie points. But, one can certainly wish for better luck next time.
