Story, Synopsis, Trivia, Dialogues for Raj Nartaki (1941)

Raj Nartaki is a 1941 Indian Bollywood costume drama, costume film released on Jan 01, 1941. The film is directed by Madhu Bose, music composed by Timir Baran Bhattacharya.

Bengali filmmaker Madhu Bose directs this Wadia Movietones-produced romantic melodrama starring his wife Sadhana Bose, a famed classical Indian dancer. The film centers on Prince Chandrakriti (played by Jyoti Prakash in the Bengali version of the film and by Prithiviraj Kapoor in the Hindi), who is obligated to marry the Princess of Tripur, even though he is in love with the beautiful royal dancer Madhuchandra (Bose). A mystical sage from the local temple convinces her to give up the prince for the good of the land, but she does so at the cost of her art and her reputation. This is one of the few pre-WWII Indian films to be released in the United States.

Best-known film by the Bose husband and wife team. Set in feudal Manipur, presumably to display Boses abilities in the famous classica dance form of the region. The story pivots around Prince Chandrakriti (Prakash/Kapoor) responsibilities to his kingdom requiring him to marry the princess of Tripur although he loves the court dancer Madhuchanda (Bose). The mystical head of a temple sect persuades Madhuchanda to give up her hold on the prince. She does so at the cost of her reputation and becomes a public outcast. One of the few Indian film made also in English and released in the USA. [Source: Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema] Check out this page for more updates on Raj Nartaki.
