Brutality, gore and violent behavior are indispensable attributes of 'Rakht Charitra 2. The story in itself is nothing more than a customary vendetta drama, but what makes you connect compellingly with the narrative is the fact that Ramgopal Varma has treated it like he was recounting a first-hand version of what really transpired between the adversaries.

But eventually, the film is essentially about revenge -- a dish best served bloody -- and the cycle of violence which leaves nobody spotless and clean. Ram Gopal Varma makes no bones about depicting Indian politics in its ugly, brutish form, where there is a complete disregard for law and constitutional propriety. Both Vivek Oberoi and Suriya pitch in a powerful act as the eyes-blood-shot brigands, while Sudeep and Shatrughan Sinha flit in and out, mostly as bystanders. The film essentially belongs to the action director (Javed-Aejaz), since it is basically a montage of finely-crafted, high-on-adrenalin action sequences.

Technically, the film deserves a round of applause for Amol Rathod’s brilliant and innovative cinematography; and Dharam Sandeep’s banging music. Yet, the film does not, in any way, create the kind of impact that it was supposed to and, at many points, drags until you feel like branding it a ‘slow-motion’ film. Even the violence repels you for some reason despite the fact that it is less gruesome than in the first part.

It is Suriya all the way and the actor has delivered a stellar performance. With a physique to match, his eyes speak volumes and his fearful emotions are an absolute treat to watch. Vivek Oberoi is equally impressive and the two look like real-life foes. Priya Mani and Radhika Apte (as Vivek’s wife) do their part well. It is typical RGV style of narration, especially when it comes to the darker side of life, and while portraying the shady underworld, he is right there with the unexpected. With technical wizardly like tilting camera angles by cinematographer Amol Rathod, gloomy colour tones and a loud background score, Ramu tries to create a real-life portrayal.

RAKHT CHARITRA 2 is not a bad film. It's disappointing because it falls in comparison with the first part. Although there is bloodshed, violence and gruesome murders that take place, RAKHT CHARITRA 2 is definitely not as gory as the previous part. Ramu doesn't carry on the momentum and tautness that he had established in RAKHT CHARITRA. It even lacks the drama which was the highpoint of RAKHT CHARITRA.

The film pits both men against each other, and illustrates how they may have more in common than either would like to believe. It’s an interesting point, and one that’s made in the film’s final scene, almost as a cliffhanger for a third film. But that would be too much to endure. Ramgopal Varma, are you listening..? I’m going with two out of five for 'Rakht Charitra 2'. More blood and more killings leave you numb your seat.

Watch this one purely to marvel at how self-obsession and the absence of a script can gut perfectly good performances. The bloodbath continues and the warning still stands. Go for it if you have the stomach for it. Alternatively, watch it for the next South superstar we ought to be poaching.

Rakta Charitra 1 had an urgency that kept the narrative moving despite the clumsy voice-over and mind-numbing violence. The sequel has some powerful scenes but lacks cohesion. In places, the scenes seem stitched together quite randomly. Oberoi, who was so much more effective in the first, mostly flares his nostrils and looks grim. But Suriya saves the film from being a total loss. His expressive eyes have a quiet strength and his presence sears the screen. Will someone please find him a better Bollywood script?

It looks funny when a film starts with a disclaimer saying, 'All the characters, plots etc are fictitious and any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental,' and is followed by another message saying the film is 'Based on a true story.' But then again, you can expect the unexpected from Ram Gopal Varma. The first 30 minutes of Rakht Charitra 2 is just a recap of the first part. But that slows the proceedings so much that by the time the second part actually starts, you've lost interest.

Surya is very impressive in his role, with expressive deep eyes. Vivek puts in his usual fire and passion, while Priyamani is good. The film is badly shot and directed and the nasal voice over sets your teeth on edge. Rakht Charitra 2 is only meant for action fans who like senseless violence.
