RUPA IS BORN IN A POOR FAMILY OF A PANDIT. HER MOTHER PASSES AWAY AT CHILD BIRTH & RUPA IS CRITICISED FOR BEING AN UNLUCKY CHILD. TO ADD TO HER SUFFERINGS SHE MEETS WITH AN ACCIDENT & BURNS HER FACE. AS SOON AS SHE GROWS UP HER FATHER TRIES VERY HARD TO ARRANGE HER MARRIAGE. BUT BECAUSE OF HER UGLY FEATURES EITHER SHE IS REJECTED OR THERE IS A DEMAND FOR DOWRY. ONE DAY A HANDSOME ENGINEER NAMED RAJIV COMES TO THE VILLAGE TO SUPERVISE & OVERLOOK THE MAINTENANCE OF A DAM IN THE VILLAGE. RAJIV HAPPENS TO HEAR RUPA SINGING & IS SPELLBOUND. HE ENQUIRES ABOUT HER & TRIES TO TRACE HER OUT. RUPA ALSO DEVELOPS A LIKING FOR HIM. SHE ALWAYS COVERS HER FACE WHENEVER SHE IS SUPPOSED TO MEET HIM. RAJIV HASTILY TAKES THE DECISION TO MARRY RUPA & MEETS HER FATHER TO SEEK PERMISSION. HER FATHER CAN'T BELIEVE HIS EARS & IMMEDIATELY ACCEPTS THE PROPOSAL. AFTER THE WEDDING RAJIV CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE SAME RUPA HE USED TO COURT AND HE REJECTS HER. TO SEEK HIS LOVE RUPA STARTS MEETING HIM EVERYDAY IN DISGUISE DONNING THE GUISE IN WHICH HE HAD FIRST SEEN RUPA. RUPA ASKS HIM TO PROMISE TO NEVER TRY TO UNVEIL HER FACE. THEY START MEETING EACH OTHER EVERYDAY & ALSO SHARE A PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP. AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF MARRIAGE RAJIV' S WIFE TELLS HIM THAT SHE IS PREGNANT BUT HE REFUSES TO ACCEPT IT AND THINKS THAT SHE HAS CHEATED ON HIM. SHE TRIES TO TELL HIM THAT SHE IS THE SAME RUPA WITH WHOM HE HAD GOT PHYSICAL BUT RAJIV DOESN'T WANT TO LISTEN TO ANY EXPLANATION. RUPA'S FATHER DIES ON HEARING THIS NEWS. A DEJECTED RUPA CURSES RAJIV & LEAVES HIM. BUT ULTIMATELY RAJIV REALISES THAT BEAUTY IS ALWAYS SKIN DEEP & HE COMES BACK TO RUPA.
Though born on the night of Lord Krishnas birthday, Roopa was considered to be an unlucky girl as she had lost her mother. Later when she grew up her face got burnt in an accident. She was cursed by her father for bringing misfortune. . When she had grown up into a maiden to one came forward to marry her. Her luck changed one day when a newly appointed Engineer on the new dam was attracted by her melidious voice. He imagined that the girl whose voice was so beautiful must be equally beautiful to look at. . It was only after he had brought her home as his wife that he saw her ugly face fully. But instead of realising the truth he accused the girl to be a fraud and walked out on her. He wanted to live in the world of fantasy that his mind had created. And Roopa shocked by his reaction of reality helped him to prepetuate the fantasy. The fury of nature strikes the village. The floods threaten the dam and the people are foced to evacuate the village. The engineer searches for Roopa of his fantassy and instead finds Roopa whose reality he had so far denied.
