Arunangshu, the Maharaja of Balwantpur, makes a wish list on his deathbed by which he forbids his son Himangshu from marrying a non-Hindu girl (a foreigner to be precise). He also wants a legitimate heir within three years of the marriage. Giving in to his father’s conditions of succession, Himangshu marries Aloka, an aspiring actress. A year-and-a-half later, Harinath — the young librarian of the Rajbari, disappears without a trace.
