A title like SHIRIN FARHAD KI TOH NIKAL PADI makes you curious and interested in the movie instantly. What augments your inquisitiveness is the fact that this one's not a love story concerning teeny boppers. It doesn't star any hero with a six-pack, neither is the leading lady a seductress. Again, the lead man is not the archetypal tall, dark and handsome. Nor is his heroine straight out of a beauty pageant. This one's a love story involving middle-aged couple. And that's one of the prime factors that sets SHIRIN FARHAD KI TOH NIKAL PADI apart

Most movies and news headlines would like us to believe problems are not problems unless they're written in bold, capital letters or accompanied by a dramatic background score. But in reality, even an out-of-work flush can put the most pacifist fella in a really foul mood. And while that's not the objective of editor-turned-filmmaker Bela Bhansali Sehgal's Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, it certainly makes for a welcome break from farcical exaggerations

If you discount the enduring cliché in Kurush Deboo’s presence, SFKTNP celebrates the cultural stereotypes of this cozy community with lighthearted and inoffensive humour. It’s certainly nowhere as grating and overbearing as the other Bhansali, Sanjay Leela’s proclivity for regional excesses as witnessed in Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The toning down is some accomplishment for the King of Extravagance given that he has both — produced and written the film.

Unwilling to settle for the first girl who’s paraded before him, 45-year-old bachelor Farhad Pastakia is clear he will marry only for love. Farhad, played by a terrific Boman Irani in debutant director Bela Bhansali Sehgal’s Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, is a lingerie salesman at a nearby store, and lives with his widowed mum (Daisy Irani) and her mother (yesteryear actress Shammi) in a Parsi colony in Mumbai. While his job proves to be a hurdle when it comes to his eligibility

Shirin is sweet. Farhad is simple. Together the sweet-n-simple combo often works if handled smartly. The likes of Hrishikesh Mukherji and Basu Chatterjee have more often than not created masterpieces out of minimalism. Bela Bhansali Sehgal essentially takes cues from the simplicity of the good old cinema to weave her own sweet little love story. Farhad (Boman Irani) works as a salesman at a lingerie shop and at 45 he is still single. Much against the behest of his momma

There's a lot in Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi that you usually don't find in Bollywood these days. When was the last time you watched a film that's full of real people, totally comfortable with their extra kilos? Shirin Farhad seems to pack a heavyweight ensemble of actors, like it wants to make a point about how thin is abnormal. Unlike Hollywood comedies that use obese actors as an excuse to make fat people jokes

Size does matter. More so when you are pushing the small-budget love story of a 45-year-old hero and a 40-something heroine who aren't exactly six-pack and size zero. In a film that sets out to twist the Bollywood rom-com, the heroine's cup size does matter. It plays an important role in setting off the box-office friendly laughs. Conveniently, the hero is a lingerie salesman. Farhad Pastakiya (Boman), 45-year-old Parsi nice guy, who makes a living selling bras and panties

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the mother of a middle-aged Parsi bachelor must be in want of a daughter-in-law. Because, really, who wants to spend the rest of their life cooking `salli boti’ for sonny boy? Farhad Pastakia, 45, seller of women’s undergarments, and helplessly unmarried, is in posession of such a one. He calls her Mummy, listens to her, and humours her ; in short, he is dutiful. And then love comes calling

It’s a good thing the film’s merits far outnumber its flaws. Beneath its cheeky wit and some of those slapstick gags, Shirin Farhad subtly touches upon issues like pride in one’s profession, embracing one’s physicality, and no expiry date on love. Bela steers clear of caricaturing the Parsi community, at best allowing Parsi characters themselves to take affectionate jibes at each others’ tics.

At under two hours, Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi demands little of you and delivers enough for you to not grudge spending time and money on it. I suggest you watch it for some honest moments and a lovable performance by Boman Irani.

Bollywood traditionally doesn’t pay attention to the love stories of forty-plus men – unless their last name is Khan and the actress is at least twenty years younger. So we should give a round of applause to debutant director Bela Bhansali Sehgal for creating a middle-aged love story. Sadly, the good intentions are marred by a weak screenplay and limp execution. Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi is a sweet but slight love story that is stretched so much that by the end

This time it is Bela Sehgal’s Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi. Her love story ruminates on bras and panties but with delightful humour. Shirin walks into Tem Tem lingerie shop and asks for 38D, salesman Farhad recommends that 36C would be more suited to her size instead. And there starts the love story of the century, at least by Parsi standards. An old man keeps writing letters to his ladylove Indira Gandhi, a trigger happy young man walks around with an old gun

It’s 36B and it isn’t a bus route. It’s a 40-year-old lady’s bust line. And it plays a sizeable role in Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi. But, then, this is no Dirty Picture, not by a long chalk. The film’s connection with feminine curves and their varied dimensions stems from the fact that its chaste-at-heart male protagonist is a 45-year-old lingerie salesman who is still in search of the perfect woman. The guy has spent half his life serving women of all

It’s great to have a mainstream Hindi movie abandon the unreality of an eternally youthful, size zero universe for a love story that centres around two 40-something adults. Set in the context of the regular airbrushed Bollywood romance, the farts-and-all reality of Bela Bhansali Sehgal’s directorial debut is nothing short of radical. But barring a few warm and funny moments, Shirin Farhad ki Toh Nikal Padi is a bit of a damp squib

Romantic novels crack it as they're painted by the flamboyant technicolour of one's imagination. But 'Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi' (SFKTNP) goes on to prove that the hero doesn't need to be right out of Mills and Boons and his love interest can have a few extra love handles. Love stories about the middle-aged have been only appreciated for their comic relief or for catering to those from the same age group as the couple on the screen

Lessons learnt from SHIRIN FARHAD KI TOH NIKAL PADI: A good choreographer need not be a good dancer. A director need not be a good actor. And for a film to have a decent run, the casting needs to be taken seriously, rather than giving out roles based on friendship in the industry. The premise of the film, per say is fresh. The lead actor, Boman Irani plays his age and acts his age and does everything right expected of him. But like a good dancer paired with a bad partner

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's sister Bela Bhansali Sehgal wanted to make a directorial debut for a long time and it's good to see her start her innings with something that doesn't belong to her brother's school of cinema. Unlike his mostly angst-ridden films, Shirin Farhad... challenges the norms of a normal love story. Instead of super good looking hot bods as its lovestruck protagonists, the limelight shifts to two 40 plus Parsis who remained unmarried due to various reasons

We’re so used to watching picture perfect romances on screen that it’s a nice surprise to have something like Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi. Farhad (Boman Irani) has a dream job as a bra-and-panty salesman. Except that he’s a 45-year old Parsi bachelor still living with his overbearing mother and grandmother. But it’s not like he’s stopped trying. Desperate to get him married, Farhad’s mother drags him to see women and even to embarrassing Parsi matrimony services

Dear Ms Bela Sehgal, please don’t get disheartened with this review or even the box office returns of this film. Just go ahead and blame it on the fact that half of India is still below the age of 25 years and that 65% of India’s population (according to official estimates) is still below 35 years of age. Now, if you haven’t been on the other side it is but natural that you won’t identify with the story that Bela Sehgal is telling through this film

Film's lead pair of Boman Irani and Farah Khan had maintained that 'Shirin Farhad...' is as simple and uncomplicated as it gets. Well, as it turns out, the film is indeed over simplified. Nothing wrong with that since one didn't quite wait for a heavy duty drama to unfold either. However what one definitely expected was a light hearted tale with dollops of humour poured in. Sadly, the film is over simplified in this department as well due to which it turns out to be

After watching editor-turned-director Bela Bhansali Sehgal’s debut film, I ponder: What is the point of Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi? Is it to tell a hatke love story, one involving two middle-aged Parsis trying to make out while trying to get married? The idea is interesting and Shirin Farhad Ki Toh... is quaintly adorable when it sticks to charming Parsis and their curious quirks. But it starts to belch and choke too soon
