SINDOOR is the story of the woman whom sodiety has forbidden to put sindoor on her forehead, had unkind fates have made her a widoe. The story is based on hard social facts-the result of our inequitable man- made social codes. . Pandit Shiva Prasad Tiwari was a prosperous cintractor of Lucknow. The rambling mansion that he owned contained in it, beside himself, his old mother (Dadi Amma); his eldest son, Beni; his second wife, who was assressed by everyone as Maji ruled the house-by the sharpness of her tongue. . Maji, who always differntiated between her step-son, Beni and Ratan, her own, made Ratan a spoilt child of the family, while Beni grew up into a self-reliant young manvery kindly disposed to the meek and oppressed. . Meera, a youg widow, lived at a nearby village, Tulsighat, wirh her child, Munna;and Chachi was the only relation of hers who was alive, and whom she called Mausi. . Panditji and Chachi are worried about Meera and Munna and in spite of Majis protests, the youg widow and her child are brought to live at Panditjis house. . In course of time Meera and Beni find themselves irresistible drawn towards each other. Thir mental stste reaches a climax when Majis daughter, Mohini, arrives with her prepfessor-husband to visit a fair, to seek goddess Ambikas blessings for an issue. .
