After long, comes a family drama which every member of a family can enjoy in the company of each other. A complete family entertainer and a feel-good movie, although it offers nothing new. …the film belongs to Rekha. Watch it for her grace and poise and her acting skills.

Sadly the film squanders the talent of its very watchable leading lady who deserves so much better than this drivel.

Super Nani takes upwards of two hours to articulate something that all those weaned on Bollywood potboilers have known for ages. While doing so, it ratchets the decibel levels up to breaking point. …To put it simply, Super Nani is a super bore.

Super Nani is a family film. But we do not recommend to watch Super Nani with your family. Instead go to the theatres with your friends and have a wonderful time laughing your heart out at corny dialogues and a ridiculously outdated plot.

Mr Kumar’s intentions in Super Nani maybe good, but this is 2014 where the audience is used to a certain standard of message delivery. Think English Vinglish, think Queen, think Highway. The finest shades of ‘women empowerment’ in Hindi cinema. You cannot wish these away and pretend you have done enough with a preachy, contrived session on family values.

Super Nani isn’t worth your time. It has absolutely nothing to offer. I wouldn’t be surprised if some actors never get a call from producers after this film.

It is supremely ironical that a film making fun of ‘saas-bahu’ serials (yes, it tries) shoves exactly those sentiments down our throat. And even more so when you call your leading lady Bharati. We can do without this creaky idea of Mrs India, thank you.

No idea why the still-so-charming Rekha took up this role — to think she did something similar, but of course, not such a regressive film, ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’ back in the 80s. If you love Rekha, watch her earlier films instead and choose to ignore this one as a terrible mistake.

Are you a die-hard Rekha fan? Then you will manage to sit through this 135 minutes of abla-naari-turned-femme fatale soap saga. At the most, the film is a decent effort by director Indra Kumar, who after having tried his hand at adult-comedy, tries to shift towards woman empowerment.

Rekha is eternal in her role. She shines as a true diva but unfortunately her timeless charm is lost in this unimaginative worn-out movie that could have being easily avoided by her. The makers should have planned something inspiring like Sridevi’s comeback vehicle ‘English Vinglish’ to do justice to Rekha’s divine talent.

Producer-director Indra Kumar (Grand Masti, Dhamaal, Dil, Beta) gives us an unpalatable mash-up of Baghban, Khoon Bhari Maang (the makeover portion), and the regressive portions from English Vinglish. Yup, that’s right. Run the other way.

The only take-away from the film is that Rekha is as beautiful, as vivacious and super talented as ever and that our writers should really think of giving her meaningful roles that suit her stature.

While Kumar might win points for versatility, for shifting from an audacious adult comedy like ‘Grand Masti’ into dictating morals in ‘Super Nani’, his transformation doesn’t appear genuine and doesn’t win us over.

The film is made with lot of heart and emotions. The movie’s biggest weakness is its predictability and over melodrama. Anupam Kher tickles funny bone as a filmmaker. Randhir Kapoor as Rekha’s on screen husband has few good scenes. Debutant Shweta Kumar is good. Watch this film if you are a fan of Rekha or Sharman Joshi.

Indra Kumar’s ‘Super Nani’ is made with lot of heart and emotions but despite its strong subject it hardly touches our soul. The movie’s biggest weakness is its predictability and over melodrama which worked two decades back when family drama movies were most served in Bollywood.

“Super Nani” is a good family entertainer, which makes the viewers laugh as well as cry. It is a great comeback for Rekha, who overshadows all other actors in the film. The predictable plot and over melodrama are its two big drawbacks, which may not stop the audience from enjoying the movie.

My review of Super Nani (2014) by bangreaayushi

No no, no super element! This film is the comeback of actress ‘Rekha’ who is seen after so much so long. Let’s see what this movie is about. The movie is taken from the Gujarati play ‘Baa Ae Maari Boundary by ‘Imtiyaz Patel’. This movie is especially a full family entertainer. The film starts with the NRI Mann (Sharman Joshi) who guides to the young generation about the importance of a mother’s love, in an interview. Even though he is an NRI, he is still an Indian by heart and goes completely ‘desi’ in attitude. Then in the picture, there is a selfless lady, his ‘NANI’ (Bharti Bhatia aka Rekha) who has been sacrificing her love for all the needs of her family. Her family has her husband, R.K. Bhatia (Randhir Kapoor), who is a business. Then there is her son Suketu (Rajesh Kumar), who is market expert and daughter-in-law Aastha (Shreya Narayan) who holds sky high aspirations to become an actress. And last but not the least, there is daughter Gargi (Anchal Dwivedi) who is modern by her values. Life becomes very miserable for her and she is overloaded with many duties and household responsibilities. Things are just the same till her grandson ‘Mann’ decides to visit India. He comes to India to make a documentary on Indian Heritage. It is after this he changes his mind when he sees there is nothing right going with his Nani. So he decides to transform her completely in her makeover to her behavior. It is her childhood friend, Sammy aka Bamboo (Anupam Kher), who also helps her and Mann in making this process complete. The film has got a concept taken from the family traditions of 80s and 90s. The film is engaging but somewhere there are many flaws, which doesn’t hold your attention till the end. The film has got no good songs that will keep you engaged till the ends. The director could have worked more on making Rekha work. Of course no doubt that it is the actress Rekha who shines throughout the film, but that Rekha‘s elements from her other movies is missing. The film makers have also worked on body languages and dialogues narrations of all the characters. Sharman Joshi has also shined in the screen and other supporting cast is also good. They have given a good supporting help to the other members of the film. This film is all about preserving the young and the old traditions and rituals. This film will only be watchable to those age groups who believe on the same. Rest it is useless to watch this film. Please go on trying something different so that you can get a good catch of stories and concepts.
