Evoking a new-age Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Rai keeps things tight, light, yet layered – and handles two leading ladies, one of whom deserves an extra half-star.

Anand L. Rai had other plans. He returns with a sequel that is rip-roaring, hits a raw nerve and is entertaining, entertaining, entertaining!So are there any flaws. Of course, but this is one film where overall brilliance overshadows these flaws.

Manu starts off being diagnosed as clinically insane.

The story doesn’t delve into the seriousness of the issue of marital discord. There are subplots and then some. A barrage of coincidences follow, that don’t seem to care much for logic or details. It’s the performances and the writing that makes it all palatable.

Kangna Ranaut has become a name big enough to call out audience to the hall single handedly. And she never takes a short-cut when it comes to acting. Tanu Weds Manu Returns is yet another film which the actress carries on her shoulders, twice over, till the climax.

Director Anand L.Rai’s plot is punctuated with moments of family tension and spiced with great rustic colloquial one-liners that sparkle. The dialogues keep you in splits.His screenplay is frothy and he takes a lazy approach in certain scenes. Though scene after scene you roll with laughter, they falter at times with forced humour.

While the first half is pacy, fun and eventful and spearheaded fabulously by Ranaut, the second is a disappointment. Devoid of ideas to reach the inevitable climax, Rai crams it with wedding festivities (three in a span of an hour) and far too many songs, which drag the proceedings and contribute little to the story.

This isn’t the first time Rai has left us gasping for more at interval point, only to overindulge with his treasure trove of actors. Tanu Weds Manu derailed similarly with some strange behavior-powered formula, and Raanjhanaa self-immolated with passion and soul. Mr. Sharma is a skilled writer as far as situational awareness is concerned. Now only if he can string lesser situations together in a more coherent manner.

As in the first movie, the biggest problem with ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ is the complete lack of insight into what makes the lead pair — or anyone, really — fall in love with each other. According to the film, Manu is an intelligent, sensible guy, but his actions defy logic. By the time the proceedings roll towards an end, the film is firmly from his point-of-view, and both Kanganas exist only to show that there are basically two kinds of women: hysterical and self-centered; and sober and self-sacrificial.

TWMR entertains you; it makes you happy, sad and euphoric all at once. It’s an intricately designed film and it’s well crafted. Easily one of the year’s best. Another fine feather in Kangana Ranaut’s flourishing hat.

…if you can look past the melodrama, ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ provides some great laughs. Go on, LOL.

As of now, Tanu Weds Manu Returns is half a good movie, and half a dunderhead. If you consider both halves of this movie like a couple, then one of them surely needed to give some love and affection to the other before the fuse blew.

Resting upon Ranaut’s talent and appeal, Rai and Sharma figure they need nothing more than picturise a few catchy songs. Why bother with a story that actually makes sense? There’s no need. Keep it stupid, put in a few pro-woman slogans because that’s what sells these days, and let Ranaut’s popularity do the rest.

…is a sureshot super-hit film. It has entertainment for all sections of the audience and for all age groups. It also has tremendous repeat value. Ladies and youngsters, especially, will adore the film.

A complete entertainer, Tanu weds Manu has returned with a bang! The film caters to audiences across all age groups and mindsets. A complete package with edge-of-the-seat entertainment. Tanu Weds Manu (2011) was a film worthy of a sequel and Rai doesn’t disappoint.

Kangana Ranaut walks away with the entire film, playing both Tanu and Kusum with panache, in what is probably the defining female performance of 2015 (in a year already filled with many). Yet, even she cannot salvage this film in the end. Half done, in this case, is just half-baked and certainly not fit to be consumed.

Two Kanganas make this sequel worth your while…

Every dialogue is dipped in the treacle of delicious North Indian dialects and the lovely nuances of the region will stay with you long after the credits roll. But their biggest victory lie in the fact that the coincidences that threaten to spoil the party and the leaps of faith that feel like heading for a dead end don’t go beyond the realm of intrinsic logic.
