Director Kunal Deshmukh returns after the success of Jannat. This time round, he sculpts an extremely mature and engrossing account of a mercurial relationship between an artist (Emraan Hashmi) and his muse (Soha Ali Khan). Now that's a love story that's been told before. But what makes Tum Mile alluring are the performances and the narrative structure: both innovative, multi-layered and show casing depth.

In TUM MILE, a couple faces two storms. The storm within, when they come face to face after their breakup. The storm outside, when a natural calamity strikes Mumbai on 26th July, 2005 [unprecedented rainfall devastated Mumbai on this date]. After JANNAT, director Kunal Deshmukh [KD] chooses a love story yet again. It's about an estranged couple, but the wallpaper in TUM MILE is the Mumbai floods. Naturally then, the expectations from TUM MILE are colossal

Once during an interview Francis Ford Coppola was asked why it took so long for Kay to leave Michael Corleone in the Godfather series. The writer-director, citing his own life, had replied that wives tend to believe their husbands when they say they would let go of their obsession for their jobs after a certain point. It’s only later they realise that certain point never comes. Whether you are a mafia don or a filmmaker or a painter like Emraan Hashmi is in Tum Mile

In Tum Mile, there's a thin metaphor to be found. Relationships are like the environment, messing with both leads to natural disasters. Only it's so vaguely highlighted, you won't give the nature bit much thought. Even though the backdrop is a real one, the nightmarish rains of July 26, 2005 which led to massive loss of life and property in Mumbai. But then that all it is, a dramatic backdrop on the side, not the nucleus of director Kunal Deshmukh's

Tum Mile that employs the backdrop of the July 26 catastrophe when Mumbai was in deep waters floats on a shallow storyline. However the decent direction by the captain of the ship (Kunal Deshmukh) makes it sail through. Like in most Bhatt films, the protagonist is into fine arts which as per the makers is restricted to music or painting. Emraan Hashmi as Akshay chooses the latter and replicates his painting passion post Raaz – The Mystery Continues

His look takes us back to our species’ ancestors rather than the metrosexual man. Yet, there is a certain coolness about this customer’s calm and confident manners, and a swagger uniquely his own, which makes it impossible to miss Emraan Hashmi’s presence on screen or his connect with the audiences. He plays a struggling artist, who prefers art for the masses than the pseudo cognoscenti. His attitude is a problem for his buyers, of course.

Don't be fooled -- this is not a film about the floods of July 26, 2005. It is just another relationship story told through a series of confusing flashbacks that concludes on the day of a devastating event. The floods and some tsunami references combine to serve as a setting for the climax of a romance and the final realisation of true love between Sanjana (Soha Ali Khan) and Akshay (Emraan Hashmi). In fact you feel disappointed and cheated that

Ex-lovers who had an acrimonious parting six years ago suddenly meet. The meeting triggers memories and eventually they find themselves sitting across a table, asking: why did we ever break up. What makes this situation unique is that the lovers meet in Mumbai on 26th July, 2005. You might recall that date - it was the day the city received 944 millimeters of rainfall in 18 hours. The nightmarish floods that followed killed over 450 people

Trapped in the deluge of 26 July, 2005, carefully navigating around half-submerged vehicles and dodging death on the flooded streets of Mumbai, Emraan Hashmi tells Soha Ali Khan that the first thing he's going to do when he gets home is watch Sholay. It is my humble suggestion that the makers of this film, Tum Mile go straight home and watch Sholay themselves. Some lessons in screenplay writing and basic shot-taking wouldn't hurt.

Set against the backdrop of the 26/7 cloudburst, Tum Mile is the story of a couple whose relationship is as stormy and unpredictable as the rains. Going back and forth in time, the story starts off on a slow note. Emraan and Soha's romance is nipped in the bud due to circumstances that force them to move apart. Six year later, they bump into each other, only to find feelings from the past making their way back to haunt them.
