On the whole, UTT PATAANG springs a pleasant surprise. It has a novel premise and what makes it even more appealing is the way the subject material has been executed. In fact, it’s a difficult film to conceptualize, pen and also execute and should be appreciated by those who have an appetite for out of the box themes.

Here are numerous twists which keep you engrossed. On the flipside, it drags a bit post the interval, only to come back strongly in the hilariously tumultuous climax.

A bag bursting with bank notes always creates big trouble, both in real and reel life. There's always a lot of people running around in knotty circles to grab it and there's always a low premium on honesty and fair play. So get ready for another fair is foul-foul is fair drama that has energetic bits and pieces amidst some mediocre stuff. Questionable too is the narrative structure which might seem innovative to few but gets clunky and incoherent

Intermittently interesting, Utt Pataang has a problem of plenty. You’ve seen this so many times in experimental gangster noir.

Five years ago with Bheja Fry, Vinay Pathak as the common man had the audience in splits. It's an avatar Vinay revisited in Dasvidaniya where he succeeded in evoking a few chuckles. This time with Utt Pataang the actor, who has a double role in the film, fails to tickle the funny bone. Playing the normal Mumbai white-collared office-goer Ram, Pathak is hoping his ex-girlfriend Mahie Gill might just see the error of her ways and return to him

Utt Pataang is an unfortunate title for a film that ends up being just that, a lot of half-baked gibberish and faltu ka utt pataang. Every time a small budget film like Utt Pataang hits the screens, the entire new bunch of content directors, who are in any case fighting an uphill battle, take a further hit, which is a crying shame. The film has the usual stale plot to strike most first time directors wanting to make a film, namely: a bag of cash

You’d imagine someone read this script and thought the supposed page-turner would make for another low-budget comic hit. They didn’t bother to apply any cinema at all.

Two bleeding hearts find love, two opportunistic cads fall out of love, and two people who happen to get it right form this sorry merry-go-round of a film. WHAT'S HOT: The casting seems apt. Sadly, it's for a film that the stars will like best left out of their resume. WHAT'S NOT: Capers involving money passing several pairs of hands is something that became over and done with, with Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. Several pretenders in the genre

Gangsta rap seem to the flavour of the week. This one is another Trying-Very-Hard-To-Be-Tarantino, with a simple guy, a dodgy detective, a spiffy hood who spouts French, a good girl who leaves home, a bad girl who wants to leave town, and assorted others, all after a bag bulging with cash. Vinay Pathak does a double : the simpleton act, which we’ve seen several times before, and the bad guy, which he flubs, not because he wants to

Utt Pataang makes for interesting viewing but it's more like a television serial than a film.
