Biography
She was born in Kolkata on August 8. She is also nicknamed as Chumki. Her parents are Birendra Kishore Roy and mother Arati Roy. She was an ex-student of APG School (Park English School). However, she could not continue her education because of her interest in dancing and acting. She entered Bollywood with the movie “Balak Gadadhar” directed by Harmony Sen in 1969. She got this role as a child artist. However, as an adult lead she first appeared in the film “Nadi Theke Sagare” directed by Arabinda Mukhopadhyay. She started her career as a stage performer in her early years. Her mother, her elder sister Purnima Roy, Bandana Sen and Kelucharan Mahapatra trained her in dancing. She has a dancing group known as “Nataraja”. She acted in the films and television serials too. She got appreciation for the film “Dadar Kirti” by Tarun Majumdar, “36 Chowringhee Lane” by Aparna Sen, “Unishe April” by Rituparno Ghosh. She was felicitated with ' National Award for the Best Actress' in the year 1996 for “Unishe April”. She is married to Prasenjit in the year 1994.
