She was also known as Lalita Rani. She was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. Her father was Krishna Rao and he was a Telugu film financier. Her mother was Neelaveni. Jaya was a trained classical dancer. At the age of 14, she performed her first annual function. Then she was given a chance to perform a dance in the three minute Telugu movie. Her first film in Telugu was Anthuleni Katha (1976). She also acted in films like: Siri Siri Muvva (1976), Adavi Ramudu, Ninaithale Inikkum etc. She then appeared in the movie Tamil film 47 Natkal for filmmaker K. Balachander. She got a chance in the movie ‘Kamchor’. After which, she got filmfare award. Her role in the movie ‘Sharaabi’ was also appreciated. In her real life, she got married to Chandra.
