She made her acting debut with the film 'Prem Qaidi' at the age of 17. She then did movies such as Jigar (1992), Raja Babu, Anari (1993), Gopi Kishan (1995), Coolie No. 1, Jeet (1996) Suhaag (1994), and Saajan Chale Sasural. She got her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Raja Hindustani. She was the recipient of the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the romantic drama Dil to Pagal Hai (1997). Her leading projects were Fiza, Zubeidaa and these two projects again gave her the filmfare awards. She is the recipient of received one National Film Award and four Filmfare Awards, among six nominations.
