His both parents Mom Jyoti Khemu and Father Ravi Khemu are actors. Kunal completed his school in Niranjanlal Dalmia High School and his College was done in Mumbai at Narsee Monjee College. Kunal was interested for acting from his childhood so he started his career as a child actor in Gul Gulshan Gulfam in 1987. Then he got chance in Bollywood movies like Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar ke (1993), Raja Hindustani (1996). Where his acting was highly appreciated and he got a chance to work in Mahesh Bhatt’s Zakham (1998) which gives the most popularity to his career. After that he was out of Bollywood for long time and came back with the movie Kalyug in 2005 as the lead character and the movie was a hit commercially and its music was very popular.
