She was born on 9 September 1909 and she died on 14 July 2003. She was born in Dharwad, Karnataka. She was born to an English Professor. She was an educated actress. Her fiancée was the part of a Marathi theatre company called Natyamanwantar. Previously, she started with her stage performances with the drama known as Usna Navra (1934). She then worked with Prabhat Pictures. Her movie 'Bombay Talkies' won her recognition. She was the first to endorse the 'Lux soap' advertisement. She played the role of a mother of Dilip Kumar in the film ’Mother India’. She got married to a much older man named Dr. Gajanan Yeshwant Chitnis at the age of 15 or 16. She had four children. She was later separated from him and worked as a school teacher. She also continued to act in movies.
