She was born on 1 August 1932 and died on 31 March 1972. She was an Indian movie actress and poet. She was considered as the most versatile actress of bollywood. She worked in many classic movies and ruled bollywood over 30 years. She is known for her role as Choti Bahu in the film Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). She ruined her life by drinking and has troubled relationships. She suffered from liver cirrhosis in 1972. She was the daughter of Ali Baksh and Iqbal Begum. Her father was a Shia Muslim, who was a veteran of Parsi theater. He played minor roles films like Eid Ka Chand and composed music for films like Shahi Lutere. Her mother was a stage actress. She started her career at the age of 7. She did movies like: Farzand-e-Watan or Leatherface (1939). She won the filmfare awards for her roles in Aarti, Main Chup Rahungi, and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. She also won the award for Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. She fell in love with the director Kamal Amrohi, who was fifteen years older than her and was already married.
