Story

Divorce is a 1938 Indian Bollywood social film released on 1938. The film is directed by Sohrab Modi.
With a bang she closed the lid of her box, as if to end all argument, and walked out of her husbands house, determined to return no more. In one long breath she had told him that he was the cause of all misery, agony and ruin. With the bitterness of her sould she had spoken, telling Niranjan that he may be a great leader, a great journalist, a great leader, a great speaker but an utterly miserable failure as a husband; and if he could have no regard for his wife more than he has for a heavy, immovable piece of furniture that was lying somewhere in the attic, he had no right to marry. . Roopa had spoken and gone, and Niranjan wondered, if with all his regard for her he deserved this vituperation. He knew that he was steeped in public life and expected the proud admiration of his wife. At any rate he had not suspected the possibility of a gathering storm that was to destroy the tranquility of his hearth. Yet the vaugely believed that this was a storm merely in the tea-cup and when it would subside she would return from her fathers house with perhaps a greter understanding that makes wives harmonise with thier husbands. And perhaps Roopa would have returned, had itnot been for the fact that she was suddenly drawn into the vortex of a mighty movement for social reform. One Chhabileal (better known as "ANDHI" on account of the paper he edited by that name) and his young friend Amarnath had approached her to take a lead in the movement that urged the inclusion if Divorce int eh Hindu social law and since Roopa, was herself metnally bent that way she accepted their proposal and fell headlong in the activity. "Andhi" was glad because Roopas coming into the field would be a sensation that would sky-rocket his paper and would bring down the sale of his atagonist " SANTAN", a conservative paper condutcted by Niranjan. Amarnath was glad too, because he craved for a closer contact with Roopa, and public life would provide him ample opportunity for attaining his desired goal. . What with meetings, harangues, processions and demostrations, the Divorce leaders carried their banners to a glorious success, through the very teeth of orthodox opposition, led by Niranjan. . Roopa did not stop at that; when the Divorce bill was declared as law she stepped forward to set and example to her suffering sisters and took her divorce from Niranjan, flouting her deed as an acto of public service! . With such disgrace, it was not possible for Niranjan to stay in the same town. He left Bombay and retired to the selucsion of Nasik; the lone sufferer, lonelier than ever! . While here in Bombay the inevitable happened; Finding in Amar all that she missed Niranajan, Roopa married him, thereby causing the death of her own father who loved his daughter too well to oppose her, and who spoke his mind but once-just before he died-and when he spoke he found that words rolled out of his lips, forming themselves into a deadly, irrevocable curse. . Niranjan sought solitude but was destined to get more and more involved in a mental struggle for which he has not prepared. He a young married woman, who was deserted by her husband and had unwittingly got into the hands of an old woman who had wanted to trade on her. His compassion for Shanta gradually changed into a love which he dared not admit even to himself. He was unwillingly conscious of the feelings of love which surged in the breast of this forlorn child of innocence who had every quality of a ture Indian wife and who was a sample of ideal womanhood, as Niranjan conceived it. He knew that the law which had released him from his obligation to Roopa could release Shanta too from her curel husband; but he refused to recognise that law, being opposed to it from the core of his being. He tossed and turned in an inward struggle, and stood in his own eyes as on ashamed. . To shanta, her new life brought the hope of re-generation but the hope was shy as a young bride, unable to lift up her eyes to see the joy which she is but vaguely conscious of.......... . Amarnath was an actor in a film company and he had become so identified with his profession that he could change his loves as esily as he would change his love as easily as he would change his heroines. He did not take much time to get tired of Roopa. With the help of his unscrupulous friend " Andhi " he devised ways and means to evoke disgust where love still reigned in the heart of Roopa. Roopa was teased and annoyed beyond endurance byt she refuses to part with him or divorce him, because a second divorce would mean a shame that Roopa would not survive. . But Amar was determined to divorce her. By promising a full-page all-the year-round advertisement for "ANDHI", Amar was able to buy its editor, who stood in the open court and admitted himself to be a secret lover whom Roopa had entertained as such. This open defamation was the last impact that broke her heart and in an effort to run away from herself, she started out in her car. . Meanwhile Niranjan found that his love for Shanta was clamouring to assert itself and Shanta too felft its impelling voice urging her onward and onward. Curbing their surging emotions they played a mental hide and seek with each other, until one day........... . (If what was happened so far has been interesting, what happens hereafter is ten times more so, and you could enjoy it most as you see it on the screen.)
