Building a motion picture franchise can be a tricky business. Ask the makers of Daredevil, the Hulk movie, The Losers or Kick-Ass. And this is just in the very recent past. So with the Harry Potter series coming to a close this year and Twilight being put to bed not long afterwards, Hollywood has got to be wondering where its next mega-franchise is going to come from. This weekend, a contender opens on movie screens around the world that seems designed

I Am Number Four wants to be Twilight, but it begs the question: is that really the height of ambition in Hollywood these days? Having said that, it's a fun, flaky film that works because of its shrewd casting and zippy screenplay. Alex Pettyfer has great screen presence and certainly has more testosterone than Twilight's softie Robert Pattinson. Even Teresa Palmer is not as annoying as sulky Kristen Stewart who plays Bella Swan in the Twilight series.

Think Twilight, but with a mediocre cast and cheesier setting. Vampires and Werewolves make way for an alien race fighting to keep nine of their brethren alive. In fact fans of the hit TV show Smallvile might draw several references and comparisons to the action scenes. I Am Number Four about an alien, who hides in a small-town in Ohio and falls in love with his high school classmate, has generated buzz as the next Twilight. But this is a film so bland and formulaic that it makes the Twilight films look like Citizen Kane. Alex Pettyfer plays the alien, John Smith, who was only one of nine to make it out of their planet, when the vicious Mogadorians attacked. Each of the nine has a specific power. But now the Mogadorians

Positioned as a hip, young romantic-thriller for the iPad generation, 'I Am Number Four' is in fact something of a cross between a bad superhero movie and a mushy 'Twilight' installment. Alex Pettyfer is Number Four, a good-looking blond teen who's actually an alien living life on the run from gill-faced adversaries intent on wiping out the last nine survivors of a destroyed planet. Forced to relocate to a close-knit town in Ohio, and instructed to stay under
