The kind of subjects director Tarsem Singh picks allows him to imbue his canvas and characters with a sense of monumentality that is becoming rare in cinema. Whether it is The Cell or The Fall, they are treated like epics. His latest, Immortals, is brutal, engaging and ironically savage given that it depicts a social order in which the gods of Greek mythology disembark for a feast of Mahabharata-style visual effects. What gives the film consistency is its explicit sense of disorder

Big Indian interest? Frieda Pinto. As the virgin oracle who gets maximum screen time amongst the female cast, this should have been reason enough for Indians to claim the film as their own. More importantly, the fact that she chooses to give up her celestial status for more earthly pleasures and falls in love with the brawny peasant leader, Theseus, should have added adequate spice to the proceedings. For many, the prospect of watching Henry Cavill spend roughly 110 minutes shirtless, will be a good enough reason to watch 'Immortals'. This swords-and-sandals epic based on a slice of Greek mythology stars Cavill as Theseus, a peasant in ancient Greece, chosen by the gods to fight the evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) who wishes to bring the world to its knees. In order to stop him, Theseus must procure the Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power

If one were to delve even into the skeletal plotline of Immortals (in 3D, ho-hum) it would be nothing more than Greek and Latin. Suffice it to say that the three pivotal characters here are so clichéd that we don't really have to worry about their fate at the end of this 100-minutes swords-and-sandals saga. Three decades ago, Conan the Barbarian did it all and with more razzle-dazzle. Back to the lead trio: Henry Cavill is a peasant whose mother has been killed

Sing to me, O Muse, of gods and men, of timeless legends and forgettable retreads. Speak of Immortals and answer in all seriousness: did you even read that awful script? As Greece teeters on the edge of financial collapse, the producers of 300 seem eager to dropkick the country into a cultural abyss. Their latest sword-and-sandals spectacular, Immortals, plunders the canon of ancient myths like a barbarian horde piling up spoils as the temple burns
