Superman has always been the quintessential clean-cut superhero, the sincere saviour of the day. While that essence remains, he now gets a decidedly darker, introspective and brutal edge under the Nolan-Snyder aegis. After emerging from interplanetary exile following a failed coup attempt on Krypton, General Zod and his crew arrive on Earth in search of the Codex - and Kal El (Cavill) - that will allow him to create a new race on EarthRead full review4.0

This is an expensive movie and Snyder makes sure you leave the theatre feeling happy about investing your money in his work. The frustrations arrive in the form of 3D, which absolutely hacks the cinematography and the special effects with a scythe and murders the fun out of the film.Read full review3.0

What I missed more than anything else in 'Man of Steel' is the old-school humour and charm of the 1978 Superman film, starring Christopher Reeve, that many of us grew up watching. The new reboot, directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, is a mostly somber affair - which shouldn't really be surprising if you think about it, given that neither is known for his lightness of touch. Both, in fact, take their comic book cultureRead full review3.0

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… no, it’s Kal-El, er, Clark Kent. And no the S doesn’t stand for Superman, in fact it is not an S at all. A huge film, with grand visuals, epic fight sequences and fine performances, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is a great summer blockbuster but without the magic that is at the heart of Superman. Here is a fangirl look at where the film scored and where it missed, compared to the man of steel films we grew up withRead full review3.0

There is something different about Zack Snyder's Superman that will make you embrace or dislike your favourite superhero from the very first time we see him in his full glory. We aren't talking about the missing curl on the forehead, or the lack of his signature red underwear, or how scaly his suit looks. We are talking about the way Superman thinks and behaves in Man of Steel. Of course fan boys and those who follow Clark Kent's adventures beyondRead full review3.0

With all its pluses and minuses, ‘Man of Steel’, is a fairly satisfying entertainer, complete with 3-D gimmickry. And it has sufficient star clout: Russell Crowe as Papa Superman is reliably impressive, delivering the most mundane lines of dialogue with a Shakespearean flourish. Kevin Costner is excellent. Michael Shannon oozes menace as all impactful superfoes should. And the British actor, Henry Cavill, fits the bill with his body-beautiful screen presence.Read full review3.0

The film is gripping even in its humourless tone and persistently noisy destructive aesthetics. It connects with its audience on the emotional front. `Man Of Steel` is definitely a recommended watch.Read full review3.0

While Snyder has succeeded in turning out a Superman that isn’t silly (not a small feat) and will likely lay enough of a bedrock for further sequels, it’s a missed opportunity — particularly with a bright cast of Shannon, Adams and Lane — for a more fun-loving spirit.Read full review3.0

Watch it closely and you would be in for a few treats if you know the supporting characters well. MOS won’t dissapoint, it gives you the right bang for you buck, but we wish this Superman soared a bit higher.Read full review3.0

The film is a fun watch. But Man Of Steel won’t redefine its genre as, say, The Dark Knight did. Watch it for some amazing 3D action and the odd burst of humour.Read full review2.5

You’ll believe a man can sigh. That’s what the godlike alien in Man Of Steel frequently does as he looks around, before he glowers and scowls and, perhaps most importantly, poses. There is very little of the winning, geeky smile we associate with Clark Kent -- indeed, the eager yet shy journalist we know and love appears for one scene in the new film -- and for a character named Superman who’s just turned 75, this feller doesn’t even haveRead full review2.0

Some two decades ago, Hollywood soothsayers had hazarded a guess: intimate dramas would become rare, comedies would continue at an even pace and mega-budget fantasies about messiahs endowed with unimaginable powers would become the predominant genre. It would seem that they were absolutely correct, since disaster spectaculars have ushered in an era of super-heroes intent on saving the world, as we know it, from immediate extinctionRead full review1.5

What is the most disconcerting part about Man of Steel though is its uneven pacing, unsure of whether it wants to be a blockbuster or a film about a man finding himself, or a boy growing up with scary powers, or a man finding his feet. It achieves none of the above credibly, being too loud (in all senses of the word) when it comes to the bang and too obvious when it comes to the pangs, and being always very, very solemn, trying very, very hard.Read full review
