For an animated film, Rango is anything but cute. And thank god for that. The characters are mostly eyesores and the landscape is harsh, even if beautifully rendered. In fact, we suspect it's secretly not intended for kids either, and will appeal to adults more. The Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski gets Johnny Depp to do his quirky number once again (as the voice of Rango) and the result is inventive, comic and thoughtful

Rango isn't in 3-D. Which is a respite from those bulky frames shoved in our faces to make that quick buck. Rango proves that you don't need that extra dimension to dazzle. It's one of the simplest story put together by a bunch of super-talented people. Depp plays a lizard who tries to bring order in an anarchic desert named Dirt. There are other creatures supporting Rango in his adventures -- the villain Jake (Nighy), the mayor (Beatty) and many others
