Don't mess with nature: this is the simple message of this superbly mounted film. But more than the simplicity of the message, it is the fact that this must be one of the warmest and most humane sci fi fantasies of late that makes Rise of the Planet of the Apes such a gripping saga. Unlike most science films, this one doesn't boast of special effects alone, although the revolt of the super intelligent primates and their war against the residents of San Francisco

Silly humans. We’re so arrogant. We see a cute, cuddly baby chimp, assign all kinds of familiar characteristics to it and raise it with the loving playfulness we’d give our own children, only to find that the creature’s unpredictable and ferocious animal nature wins out in the end. If the documentary Project Nim didn’t serve as enough of a warning for us earlier this summer, now we have the blockbuster Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The star primate of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes is probably smarter than most people you might know. Caeser can play chess, masters sign language, has an enviable IQ and can even lead a revolution. Heck, he even beats his human co-stars in the acting department. Freida Pinto stars in yet another movie where she isn't taxed with much to do, except kiss the dishy James Franco. She works well as a pretty prop though, since most screen time

A cult favourite at the time of its release back in 1968, the first Planet of the Apes spawned four sequels and a remake. But there was one avenue that remained unexplored: a prequel to the original film. Ergo, this latest incarnation. Aiming to harness the blockbuster possibilities of the sci-fi parable by the French novelist Pierre Boulle, British indie director Rupert sets the cautionary tale in modern day San Francisco. A brash young geneticist

Andy Serkis is the man. The irony of this statement, of course, is the fact that he plays the role of an intelligent ape named Caesar in this reboot of the Planet Of The Apes series. In fact, in a movie that stars Oscar nominees, franchise favourites and one flavour-of-the-season actress whose entire career is based on dumb luck, it is Serkis who owns every frame. In fact, I'd like to go out on a limb and call this one of the best performances we've seen
