One would have thought they'd scorch the screen with their chemistry. Yet, ironically, Johhny Depp and Angelina Jolie simply simmer in this romantic thriller which fails to set the screen on fire, despite bringing together a hot and happening pair. Depp seems a bit out of depth and Jolie's somewhat stiff and distant in a drama that required them to build up a tempestuous romance neath the shadow of bullets and guns. The high point of The TouristRead full review2.0

Blame it on the hype. I suppose it is a bit churlish to say it but it must hold true when you can put Depp and Jolie in the same sentence and feel the burden of rising expectations and watch them crumble as soon as the two enter the same frame. Frank Tupelo (Depp) is the kind of tourist you wouldn't accord a second glance to in a place like Venice. Especially, if you're a woman like Elise Clifton-Ward (Jolie). He is so plain it's almost funnyRead full review2.0

Donnersmarck's debut film The Lives of Others is ranked by some as one of the best films of all time. How does one go from that to The Tourist? From a story of love and courage in an oppressive Communist East Germany to a Venice canal ride that masquerades as a mystery romance? Well, that’s the risk you take when you get Jolie, put her on a boat, cast her as a wanted gangster’s moll, endow that gangster with a chutzpah worth $2 billionRead full review2.0

The Tourist is irrefutable proof that even the best names in the business have bad movie days. The talent on this movie has enough awards to fill up a room. It's directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who earlier made the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others. The co-writers include Christopher McQuarrie who won an Oscar for The Usual Suspects and Julian Fellowes who won an Oscar for Gosford Park. The costumes are done by Colleen AtwoodRead full review1.5

It must take a special kind of talent to make a film as dull as 'The Tourist'. This astonishingly clumsy thriller stars Angelina Jolie as an icy Brit named Elise, who’s being followed around the streets of Paris by a team of Scotland Yard detectives in the hope that she will lead them to her lover-in-hiding, who’s stolen millions of dollars from a dreaded London gangster. To throw them off the trail, Elise picks up Johnny Depp’s characterRead full review1.0

It feels like this has been a pretty bad year for mainstream cinema, no matter what your poison is. Bollywood and Hollywood have churned out big budget stinkers with greater than either's usual frequency. This is not going to be a better weekend for Hollywood movie fans. What is the worst thing about watching The Tourist? Could it be the strange pacing that makes the whole affair feel like a somnambulists convention? Could it be that audiencesRead full review1.0

Angelina Jolie. Johnny Depp. Venice. That's most of your work done right there. So the director thought why waste a good plot when all you can see on screen is Ms Jolie's pout? In times of recession, the director has been thoughtfully economical with the story, screenplay, dialogue, chemistry, wit and common sense. That leaves us with Johnny Depp, with offended hair that gave up on him when it figured out the competition Angelina's Luscious Lips.Read full reviewNR
