Kanan Devi is a Actor and also worked as Singer. Kanan Devi has mostly worked in Bengali and has worked in languages like Bengali, Hindi.
She was born on 22 April 1916 and she died on 17 July 1992. She was an Indian actress and singer. She was considered as an Indian actress. She acted in Hindi and Bengali movies. She was known for her singing style, usually in rapid tempo. She was born in Howrah, West Bengal. She was the daughter of an adopted father,’ Ratan Chandra Das’. She did her schooling from Howrah's St. Agnes' Convent School. She was casted in small role in Jaidev (1926) and since then she was known as 'Kanan Bala'. She did 5 movies with: Madan Theatre productions. Some of her movies were: Rishir Prem, Jorebarat, Bishnumaya and Prahlad, playing even male leads in the last two. But, she got noticed after the movies: Jorebarat, Manomoyee Girls School, Khooni Kaun and Maa (1934). Her movies: Vidyapati, Saathi, Street Singer, Sapera, Jawani ki Reet, Parajay, Abhinetri, Lagan, Parichay and Jawab became much hit. She worked with the well known names: K.L. Saigal, Pankaj Mullick, Pramathesh Barua, Pahari Sanyal, Chabi Biswas and Ashok Kumar. She was the recipient of the Padma Shree in 1968 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1976.
