This one's a blood fest that's meant only for those who have an insatiable appetite for gore. In fact, there's so much blood splattered across the screen and so many people reduced to skeletons, it almost gets funny. At one point of time, you have all kinds of body parts floating in the water as the teeth-gnashing critters dig their little sabres into human flesh with a manic frenzy.

Piranha 3D is a movie that wants to have its cheesecake and eat it too. I mean this more or less literally. The entertainment formula behind this short and nasty movie — devised according to someone’s idea of what teenage boys with the guile, the facial hair or the “guardian” to gain admission to an R-rated movie are likely to enjoy — is sloppy and simple. Young women dance around in, and frequently shed their bikinis, and are then devoured by swarms of predatory fish.

Very often a title tells you everything you need to know about a film. "Piranha 3D" is that kind of title. This shamelessly exploitative film is set during spring break at a lake in Arizona, where a minor earthquake unleashes what seems like hundreds of razor-toothed prehistoric piranhas on an unsuspecting parade of holidaying students. If you had seen director Aja’s The Hills Have Eyes, you would know he isn’t particularly squeamish about blood and gore. But what he couldn’t get mutants created by nuclear radiation to do, he manages with piranhas. Half-chewed bodies — that’s the hallmark of Piranha. Sheriff Julie Forester (Shue) has her hands full keeping the law as students on Spring Break make their way to town and as a single mom, counts on her teen son Jake (McQueen) to take care of his siblings Zane (Sage Ryan) and Laura (Brooklyn Proulx). In the grand American tradition, kids never do as they're told and while the younger siblings get stranded on an island, Jake gets aboard a yacht where a soft porn flick shoot is in progress.
